Worried About App Permissions and Your Privacy? Check Out McAfee and Verizon’s App

Listen up, Android users! As Robert Siciliano mentioned in one of his recent blogs, the Android OS has become the most popular target for writers of mobile malware and your beloved apps are the weak link. At McAfee we believe that apps are the new playground for cybercrimes, which means that users should understand how apps can potentially compromise their personal data.

It might seem like a headache trying to understand how to stay protected from text-sending malware, mobile botnets, spyware, and destructive Trojans, which is why Verizon Wireless and McAfee created a service that will solve your security woes.

Verizon recognizes the importance of keeping customers safe. Mobile threats can compromise privacy, and in the worst case, lead to data loss or identity theft. This new services for U.S. Verizon customers, includes security and privacy features for Android smartphones and lets users choose from three levels of mobile protection, all of which include award-winning McAfee mobile security technology.

  • Basic Protection: The Verizon Mobile Security Basic version of the app, which is free for all Verizon Wireless customers, features our award-winning McAfee SiteAdvisor® and antivirus technology. This service provides real-time safeguards from viruses, worms, spyware, key loggers, bots and other potentially unwanted programs. The service also blocks access to suspicious sites that contain links or downloads that may be harmful to mobile device users. Customers can download the app via Google Play or myverizonwireless.com.
  • Premium Protection: For less than $2 a month, customers can upgrade to Verizon Mobile Security Premium Protection for an additional layer of security. This version features McAfee App Alert, a privacy system which gives users information about the types of permissions that their apps have, such as location, contacts, and network.
  • Total Protection: Verizon Wireless also offers Verizon Mobile Security with Total Equipment Protection. Customers can get this for less than $8 per month and it includes all of the key McAfee security and privacy capabilities in the Premium plan, with the added features of locate, lock, recovery and device insurance.
